Requirements for admission

The admission requirements for each course are as follows.

  1. Those who have completed 12 years of school curriculum in foreign countries (or the equivalent curriculum in Japan).
    Or those who have a qualification to enter university in their countries.
    Or those who are at least 18 years of age and are recognized by Yokohama Design College as having academic abilities equivalent to the above qualification.
  2. Those who meet at least one of the following qualifications:
    ・Those who have undergone Japanese language education for at least 6 months at institutions accredited by the Minister of Justice, with the attendance rate (the number of hours) of at least 90%.
    ・Those who have passed Level N2 or above of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) conducted by Japan Educational Exchanges and Services and the Japan Foundation.
    ・Those who have scored at least 200 points for the subject “Japanese as a Foreign Language” in the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), conducted by Japan Student Services Organization.
  3. 3. Those who can commit to the constant attendance rate (the number of hours) of at least 90%.

From application to enrollment

  • 1. Interview


    Through online communication using Skype or other tools, we will have a meeting to provide information on the school, to check the applicant’s Japanese language skills, and to conduct an interview. Please contact the Admissions Office first.
    We will notify the interview result within a week.
  • 2. Submit documents and pay the screening fee


    Please prepare the necessary documents and mail them to Admission Office via EMS, DHL, TNT or other services with a tracking system. Meanwhile, please also pay the screening fee.
    Please note that the application documents will not be returned once received by the school.
  • 3. Submission of documents to Immigration Bureau


    Yokohama Design College will put the documents together and submit them to the Immigration Bureau.
  • 4.  Complete the admissions process (pay the tuition and fees)


    A Certificate of Eligibility will be issued as a proof that the screening has been approved by the Immigration Bureau.
    We will send you a bill, so please pay the tuition and fees to the bank specified by the school.
    The admission may be canceled if the admission process is not completed by the due date.
  • 5. Receive the Certificate of Eligibility and obtain a visa


    We will send you the Certificate of Eligibility upon confirming your payment of the tuition and fees.
    Please apply for a visa at the nearest Japanese Embassy.
  • 6. Arrive in Japan and attend the entrance ceremony


    Please arrive in Japan by the specified date.
    We hold an entrance ceremony and start classes in early April or mid-October.

Screening fee

The screening fee is 20,000 yen. Please make a payment when submitting the application documents.
The fee is non-refundable regardless of the screening results.

Application periods are as follows.

For the April enrollment (all courses) From early October of the year before the program starts

Please check the vacancy beforehand as applications will be closed once we reach the maximum capacity.

Required application documents

The necessary application documents are as follows.
Please note that additional documents may be requested during the screening process by Immigration Bureau.
For certificates issued in your country, please have them translated in English or Japanese.

By the Applicant

(1) Application for admission (A-1 & 2) …The specified forms are to be filled out by the applicant.
(2) Personal record (B-1, 2 & 3) …The specified forms are to be filled out by the applicant.
(3) Declaration (D-1) …The specified form is to be filled out by the applicant.
(4) 5 photos (4cm x 3cm) …Please write down your name and date of birth on the back.
(5) Certificate of graduation, a certificate of completion or a diploma from the last educational institution you attended …Please submit the original.
(6) Academic transcript from the last educational institution you attended …Please submit the original.
(7) Certificate of enrollment …Please submit it if you are a current student.
(8) Japanese language proficiency certificate …Please submit one of the following:
●Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Certificate of Result and Scores (N2 or above)
●EJU certificate of scores (at least 200 points for the subject “Japanese as a Foreign Language”)
●Certificate of attendance and an academic transcript at a Japanese language school you attended in the past
(9) Photocopy of your passport (if you already have a valid passport) …If you have been to Japan before, please also submit a photocopy of the visa and of the entry/exit stamps.
(10) Proof of employment …Please submit a proof of employment at your workplace if you are currently employed.
(11) Application for student dormitory …Please submit it if you would like to live in the dormitory.

By the Supporter

(1) Letter of support (C-1) …The specified form is to be filled out by the supporter with a registered seal.
(2) Declaration (D-1) …The specified form is to be filled out by the supporter with a registered seal.
(3) Official document that proves the supporter’s relationship to the applicant …e.g. a photocopy of birth certificate, family registry, etc.
(4) Official bank statement …The statement on the account of the supporter
(5) Document that proves the supporter’s employment/business …Please submit one of the following: proof of employment, a photocopy of corporate registration, or a photocopy of business license.
(6) Proof of annual income …A document to prove the supporter’s annual income
(7) Proof of tax payment …A document to prove the supporter’s tax payment
(8) Additional document if the supporter lives in Japan …Please submit a certificate of residence, certification of information on an alien registration card, a tax certificate, or a proof of tax payment

Scholarships

The following scholarships and honors scholarships are available to privately-financed international students at Yokohama Design College.

(1) Ishikawa Academy special entrance scholarship for international students …It is offered to all international students when they enter the school, by deducting 100,000 yen from the total tuition and fees.
(2) Special scholarship for the second-year privately-financed international students …It is offered to international students whose final attendance rate in the first year is at least 90% (calculated by the number of hours) when they advance to the second year, by deducting 100,000 yen from the total tuition and fees due at the start of the second year.
(3) Honors scholarship for privately-financed international students by Japan Student Services Organization …Several students who demonstrate excellent performance (attendance and grades) during the first year at the school can receive the Honors Scholarship from Japan Student Services Organization. The monthly stipend is 48,000 yen (as of fiscal 2017).
The school selects the students and submits its recommendations to the organization.
(4) Ishikawa Academy honors scholarship for awards …It is offered to students who have won an award, equivalent to the first prize, outside the school.
(5) Honors scholarship for certification …It is offered to students who have passed various certificate examinations and meet other criteria, by deducting the amount from the total tuition and fees.
